Overwhelm to Ease: 3 Time Management Tips for BUSY Holistic Biz Owners

Until you value yourself, you will not value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.

The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.

The challenge of many Holistic Business owners is that they have SO many ideas and SO much they want to do that they can easily move into overwhelm and then hardly get anything done!   That is why time management is such a “hot” topic with my private coaching clients.  Over the years I have come up with some powerful tools and tips to help even the most scattered, creative Holistic Business owner stay focused.

3 Time Management Tips for the Creative, BUSY Holistic Business Owner

#1. Identify and Eliminate Your Time Wasters– Over my years of coaching Holistic Business owners I noticed the more overwhelmed someone is the chances are very high that they are engaging in time wasters every day.  These have become so routine for them they don’t even notice they are doing them anymore.  It could be watching too much TV, being on the internet for much longer than they intended, taking too long on minor projects, etc.

Solution: My favorite exercise to give them to help them begin to identify these is my “Time Study Exercise”. This is where they write out what they are doing every 30 minutes during their entire day.  I have them do this for a few days.  This exercise helps them flush to the surface their time wasters and once these are eliminated they often have 5-10 more hours a week that they didn’t have before.  How cool is that! (If you would like a copy of this exercise to do yourself email us at support@thegahp.com and we will send you a copy)

#2. Are you being Productive or BUSY-One of the questions I have my coaching clients ask themselves during the day is “Am I being productive right now or just busy.”  The distinction is that if they are being productive they are doing specific things that are moving their business forward, oftentimes doing what I call an “income generating activity.”  If they are just being busy they are doing minor tasks like cleaning their desks, ordering supplies etc. which make them feel like they are doing something, but they really are just spinning their wheels.  Oftentimes you will know when you are doing this because at the end of the day you will think “I was busy all day but what did I really get done!?”

Solution-Do you have a 90 day plan and a 6 month plan for your business?  In our Holistic Leader Academy Programs we have our members develop their 90 day plans and then break down their Plans to specific steps. The more you have a clear plan of specific projects and activities that are truly building your business the more powerfully you will grow your business.  If you don’t have a plan it is easy to slip into the busy mode and not the productive mode.

#3. Keep a Master List of Everything That Needs to be Done-Oftentimes many creative, Holistic Business Owners don’t like keeping lists and feel a bit “reined in” even by the thought of using one.  I know the feeling because I resisted using a list for many years myself.  What I discovered though is that keeping track with a list instead of feeling constricting to me it freed me up to be SO much more productive.

Solution: What I found works best for me and for my clients is to get a beautiful notebook—one that is inspirational for you.  The one I am using right now is purple /pink and has fairies on it 🙂  In the notebook I write down EVERYTHING I need to do.  On one side of the page it is all business related and the other side is things I need to do for my personal life.  Whenever anything comes to mind of what I have to do I make sure to put it on the list. I carry the notebook with me everywhere I go.  Then every day I take a sticky note and write 3 project based things I will do to move things powerfully forward in my business.  I will put this sticky note on my computer and I won’t let myself work on anything else until those 3 items are done.

What things do you do to manage your time?  I would love to hear from you 🙂

Thank you Shelly, I love your tips on Time management.Specially the # 3 tip, I make list on separate papers and sometimes I loose track of it,so your idea of keeping a Master list,in business and personal,is a great way of keeping focus and in ONE spot. Thank you for sharing 🙂

Great reminders Shelley, thank you. I need to do a few days of recording what I’m up to as I am definitely into some of the busy but not productive! However, one way that I have ensured being productive at least once a day is by creating a sticky note on my screen that says “What one thing can I do today to move my business forward”. That way at least I always get ONE thing done….!!
